Is it just me, or does everyday bring more, and worse, reports of our troops being decimated in Iraq? I am amazed that we went into Iraq "in order to save the world from WMDs," and also to "rid the world of the cruel and evil dictator," Saddam Hussein. In the process, we defeated, and supposedly eliminated, the Elite Republican Guard, Saddam's top military force. We suffered casualties, and each one was a terrible loss, but compared to our current combat and (worse yet) non-combat losses, our first engagements with "the enemy" was a walk in the park.
One must ask: Why are we still there? We are being kicked around by a rag-tag group of poorly trained street fighters. They appear to take their pick of times and places they want to attack, do their damage, and disappear into places we can't find them, and they are incredibly successful. Perhaps one reason they are successful, is that they are defending their homes, their way of life, whether or not it is what we would choose for them, and, among other things, their religious beliefs which they feel are greatly threatened by the invaders. Do they speak for all Iraqis? Not likely, but they speak the loudest and have the power to make other people of Iraq take notice and listen to their positions on these issues.
Why are we still there? Is it so we can lose more of our troops defending the rights of Iraqis to have an election it appears will be indecisive or unrecognized by a group so powerful that it can use violence until they get the results they want?
If the reason we entered this war was about WMDs, we can leave. In spite of what we were led to believe, they just weren't there. If the reason, instead, was to remove Saddam, the "cruel and evil dictator," we can leave, patting ourselves on the back for a job "well done." Besides, there are dozens of "cruel and evil" dictators in the world, probably just waiting for us to come liberate their countries. I'll bet they are already training their own "rag-tag" insurgents, waiting for us to dare to challenge them. If it goes there, as it has gone in Iraq, they certainly won't need an army.
Enough is Enough!
